JOB TITLE: Firefighter
CLASS: 56F
STARTING PAY: $46,350 plus $4,300 for state incentive once eligible.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE JOB:
Firefighters will be working as part of a fire company and under direct supervision of an Officer; the firefighter protects life and property by performing fire suppression, emergency medical treatment, technical rescue, fire prevention, hazardous materials response and public fire education duties. The firefighter maintains fire equipment, apparatus and facilities. The firefighter receives training through classroom instruction and by performing practiced skills.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for the job. This position requires the firefighter perform all other duties as assigned.
The firefighter shall perform firefighting activities to include: enter burning buildings with hose lines and equipment, to include self-contained breathing apparatus; operate nozzle and place streams of water on fires as directed; operate various types of hand tools, fire extinguishers and similar equipment as required: raise, lower and climb ladders; manually breach walls and other obstacles to fight fires. Remove persons from danger, by performing rescue work to include, rescue from burning buildings, ladder rescue, rope rescue, vehicle rescue, trench rescue and confined space rescue. Respond to and mitigate incidents where hazardous materials are present. Drive fire department vehicles to and from emergency and non-emergency assignments as directed. Check and maintain equipment to insure operational readiness. Receive and direct fire calls and alarms to appropriate agencies. Operate radio and other communication equipment. Clean and sanitize personal protective equipment, firefighting apparatus and all related equipment. Perform routine household duties including but not limited to: cooking, cleaning windows, sanitizing kitchen and bathrooms, vacuuming or mopping floors and dusting furniture. Agree to respond when available off duty to any response requiring more help than the on duty staff can provide or in times of emergency.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
• Meet all requirements of the City of Elizabethtown Civil Service Commission
• Meet all requirements for employment required by the Kentucky Fire Commission
• Possess a High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• U.S. Citizen and 18 years or older at the time of employment
• No felony conviction or criminal history within the past 7 years.
• Possess a valid Kentucky driver’s license without record of suspension or revocation in any State.
• Successfully pass a background check that demonstrates the applicant is free from any personal problems that would render him unfit to be a representative of the fire department.
• Maintain physical fitness and health to successfully complete a yearly examination based on the standards found in NFPA 1582
• Ability to perform strenuous or peak physical effort during training, emergency activities and station maintenance for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold and or smoke.
• Ability to learn to apply standard firefighting practices, technical rescue, emergency aid, hazardous materials and fire prevention techniques
• Work effectively in emergency and stressful situations
• Ability to follow verbal and written English language instructions
• Ability to communicate in English effectively, both orally and in writing
• Ability to establish effective working relationships with fellow employees, other agencies, and the general public
• Within 12 months of appointment, the candidate shall successfully complete 400 hours of fire training and all other requirements established by KRS 95A, City of Elizabethtown policies and fire department policy and procedures.
• Within 24 months of appointment, become Firefighter I and II certified
• Within 36 months of appointment successfully complete an emergency medical certification.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands listed here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions of a firefighter.
• STANDING: Frequently; dynamic standing, raising ladders, operating a hose, clearing debris, inspecting equipment, sweeping and mopping.
• WALK ON ROUGH GROUND or UNEVEN SURFACES: Frequently, when working in fire scenes that have no pavement or smooth surfaces, working on slippery surfaces, and working on surfaces strewn with debris.
• SITTING: Frequently, working at a desk, and riding in apparatus to and from assigned duties
• DRIVING: Occasionally, if assigned to drive equipment to and from a fire or accident scene
• BALANCE: Occasionally, when climbing ladders or stairs, suppressing fires at or near rooftops or several stories above ground, walking or running on wet or muddy surfaces, carrying victims
• WORKING AT HEIGHTS: Occasionally, when suppressing fires at or near rooftops or several stories above ground, climbing/standing on a ladder
• LIFTING: Frequently, lifted from floor to waist up to 100lbs. Occasionally from waist to overhead up to 50lbs
• CARRYING: Frequently, a wide variety of items at numerous distances including patients over various terrains and elevations.
• CLIMB STAIRS OR LADDERS: Occasionally, deploying and climbing a ground or aerial ladder to enter a building or suppress a fire; climbing stairs in a building to reach sources of fires or to access and retrieve victims
• AWKWARD POSITIONS: Occasionally, reaching over or under wreckage or debris to reach and remove a victim, or remove debris and obstacles at an accident or fire scene
• TWIST OR TURN: Frequently, removing and replacing protective gear, tools and equipment from the truck, removing, deploying and replacing ground ladders, moving or removing furniture or other obstacles
• BEND/STOOP: Occasionally, unwinding hoses, laying hose, coupling and uncoupling a hose, mopping floors, or dismantling a vehicle
• CROUCH/SQUAT: Occasionally, unwinding hoses, pulling hose, coupling and uncoupling a hose, administering first aid to a victim
• CRAWL/KNEEL: Occasionally, crawl: on the floor or through wreckage to access a victim; kneel: Occasionally unwinding hoses, laying/pulling hose, coupling and uncoupling a hose, administering first aid to a victim
• REACHING: Frequently, floor to waist, waist to shoulder and shoulder to overhead: lifting and climbing ladders, swinging axes and similar tools, moving furniture, pulling up to enter fire apparatus, store and retrieve stored items
• EXTENSION/FLEXION: Occasionally; extension: pushing ladders back into trucks or engines, pushing on internal or external doors in buildings, shoving debris away at a fire or MVA scene; flexion: retrieving hoses, grasping ground ladders below waist
• HANDLING/GRASPING: Frequently, using tools, hoses, first aid cases, ladders, protective gear, backboards, removing victims, sweeping and mopping
• FINGER/FEEL: Occasionally, putting on and removing protective gear, writing reports, typing on a computer, using MSA self-contained breathing apparatus
• OPERATE FOOT CONTROL: Occasionally, if assigned to drive equipment
• SPEAK/HEAR REQUIREMENTS: Essential to be able to speak to and hear fellow Fire Fighters, Commanders, and victims in a variety of ambient noise conditions.
• VISION REQUIREMENTS: Near and far acuity to perform duties of this position; must be able to see and operate equipment and tools in low visibility and/or smoky conditions
• ENVIROMENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Frequently, work in the outdoors subject to temperature extremes and high humidity to wet conditions. Occasionally, work in structures under adverse conditions including those that are immediately dangerous to life and health
