JOB TITLE: Maintenance 1 CLASS: 53
DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation (Pritchard Community Center)
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE JOB:
Under the supervision of the Community Center Manager or other supervisor, the employee in this job will work in all areas of the Parks and Recreation Department, specifically Pritchard Community Center. This is mostly routine work involving the use of some skills acquired by experience or on-the-job training. A Maintenance I worker will normally receive work orders orally and have work inspected frequently. This position may require supervision of full and part time laborers as well as seasonal workers.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Routine set-up for building functions and events which includes tables, chairs, PA system, audio/visual devices, and event related equipment. Routine maintenance and care of the entire Center which includes but is not limited to meeting rooms, restrooms, kitchen areas and grounds. Mow grass, trim weeds, shrubs, tree limbs, and fallen trees. Use push mowers, hand implements, and small gasoline engine tools. Pick up and dispose of trash and litter. Assist in the application of chemicals such as herbicides, fungicides, and other pesticides. Perform assorted janitorial duties. Work special activities and events that involve long hours and varying shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays. Work outdoors in all weather conditions. Meet with the Building Manager or other supervisor to discuss and plan work objectives. Perform tasks above ground using ladders, scaffolds, or lift equipment. Assist in the preparation of Park facilities for public use. Supervise other employees in the completion of work assignments. Perform other duties as assigned.
ELEGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
- High School graduate or equivalent GED.
- Must have any combination of training, education or experience equivalent to two (2) years’ experience with park maintenance in the area of buildings, grounds, and special events.
- Possess a valid Kentucky Driver’s License.
- Candidate must be available and willing to work long hours and varying shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English.
- Ability to follow and give written and oral directions and instructions.
- Cannot be convicted of any crime, felony or misdemeanor, involving child neglect or abuse.
- Physically capable of performing essential job functions.
- Ability to effectively interact with the public, co-workers, and various public groups.
- Ability to promote a positive self-image and lead by example.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

- Operate and maintain equipment and park facilities.
- Identify and carry out necessary work projects needed for the proper maintenance and operation of the Parks Department.
- Maintain grounds by mowing, edging, fertilizing, sod work and over seeding.
- Plant and prune trees and shrubs.
- Perform assorted janitorial duties.
- Pick up and dispose of trash and litter.
- Follow department and City policies and procedures; safety procedures and practices.
- Utilize proper methods and safety precautions in the performance of duties and maintenance of facilities and grounds.
- Pick-up and move items weighing as much as 125 lbs. with assistance.
- Work courteously and use good telephone etiquette.
- Shovel snow, gravel, dirt.
- Use assorted hand tools.
- Handle money transactions and reconcile cash till and reports.
- Maintain positive and effective relationship with public and co-workers.
- Work variable hours and/or shifts.
- Work overtime as required by supervisor.
- Be on call as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
