JOB TITLE: Building Inspector
JOB CLASS & PAY: Dependent on Qualifications under the KY Certified Building Inspector Program
MINIMUM HOURLY RATE:
Building Inspector (Residential) Class: 55 $19.79 / hour
Building Inspector I Class: 56 $21.77 / hour
Building Inspector II Class: 57 $23.88 / hour
Building Inspector III Class: 58 $26.74 / hour
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CLASS:
This position involves the inspection of residential and commercial structures to ensure that the minimum standards necessary to make dwellings fit for human habitation are maintained as per the requirements of the City of Elizabethtown. Supervision is received by the Chief Building Official and Director of Planning & Development.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Perform routine inspections to determine that structures are safe for occupancy and meet the minimum established requirements for the proper maintenance of dwelling units, appliances, equipment, and utilities.
- Assist in maintaining all records and documents in code enforcement actions.
- Assist in actions taken in the condemnation of unsafe structures.
- Communicate with property owners, contractors, and the general public regarding code requirements, inspection results, and the status of permit applications.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Possess a valid Kentucky driver’s license.
- Basic knowledge of all types of building construction.
- Certification as a Kentucky Building Inspector, Level I within 6 months of employment, and a Level II within 12 months.
- Familiarity with building construction and inspection terminology.
- Physically capable of performing essential job functions.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment including printers, computers, and associated software such as word processing, spreadsheet, database software.
- Ability to exercise good judgment, courtesy, and tact in dealing with the public.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
- Neat in appearance, good moral character and not convicted of a felony crime.

- Communicate with the general public in a clear, polite, and understandable manner.
- Work overtime, or at hours other than regular office hours, as necessary.
