1. Within two years of employment, successfully pass and become certified in Haz-Mat – Technician Level.
2. Within two years of employment, successfully pass and become certified in Emergency Medical Technician First Responder training and other requirements established by departmental rules and regulations.
3. Ability to perform strenuous or peak physical effort during training, station maintenance and emergency activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold or smoke.
4. Ability to act effectively in emergency and stressful situations.
5. Ability to follow verbal and written English language instructions; Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
6. Ability to establish effective working relationships with fellow employees, other agencies, and the general public.
7. Must, to the satisfaction of the department, successfully pass a background check that demonstrates that the applicant is free from any personal problems that would tend to render him unfit to be a representative of the fire department. Such background check shall include, but is not limited to, inquiry as to credit standing, morality, criminal record or character of the applicant.
9. Resident of Hardin County.
Meet all requirements of the City of Elizabethtown Civil Service Commission.
2. High school diploma or GED equivalent.
3. U.S. Citizen and 18 years or older at the time of employment.
4. Ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing.
5. No felony conviction or criminal history within the past 7 years.
6. Possess a valid Kentucky driver's license without record of suspension or revocation in any State.
7. Ability to learn to apply standard firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials and fire prevention techniques.
8. Within 12 months of appointment, must successfully complete 400 hours of fire training in State required hours, even if eligible for State Incentive pay.

Additional Comments:
Under supervision, protects life and property by performing fire fighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials response and fire prevention duties. Maintains fire equipment, apparatus and facilities. Receives training and instruction and practices skills.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or operate objects, tools, controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, taste and smell.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and the risk of electrical shock and vibration.

The noise level of the work environment is usually moderate except during certain firefighting or emergency and activities when noise levels may be loud.


The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.
1.Perform firefighting activities including driving fire apparatus, operating pumps and related equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks.
2. Perform emergency aid activities including administering first aid and providing other assistance as required.
3. Perform technician level Haz-mat duties with proper training.
4. Participate in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects.
5. Receive and relay fire calls and alarms. Operates radio and other communication equipment.
6. Participate in the inspection of buildings, hydrants, and other structures in fire prevention programs.
7. Maintain fire equipment, apparatus and facilities. Perform minor repairs to departmental equipment.

8. Perform general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; cleans and washes walls and floors; cares for grounds around station; makes minor repairs; washes, hangs and dries hose; washes, cleans, polishes, maintains and tests apparatus and equipment.
9. Perform specific duties as defined in “Examples of Duties”.
10. Respond to assigned duty station when manpower needs exceed the on duty staff.
